The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) in Houston has rolled out its first electric buses, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of its fleet. The electric buses have been deployed on two routes: the 402 Bellaire Quickline, which now operates entirely with an electric fleet, and the 28 OST-Wayside route, serving historically underserved neighborhoods such as the Fifth Ward. By introducing electric buses in communities disproportionately impacted by air pollution, METRO aims to promote environmental justice and provide a cleaner, more sustainable transit option for passengers. The new electric buses are part of METRO's commitment to investing in customer experience and environmental sustainability. These buses are equipped with features like USB charging ports, multiple wheelchair securement areas, and extra space for ADA patrons to ensure a comfortable and accessible ride for all passengers. Moreover, the transition to electric buses aligns with METRO's broader sustainability initiative, which focuses on reducing emissions and promoting eco-friendly transit options. METRO's plan to expand its green fleet includes adding 20 electric buses and 14 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses in the future, with funding support from the Federal Transit Administration. This initiative reflects a strategic shift toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious public transit system in Houston, benefiting both passengers and the community at large.
