Transit systems in Detroit and Ann Arbor are benefiting from more than $55 million in federal funding to acquire hydrogen-powered and diesel-electric hybrid buses. The Detroit Department of Transportation is receiving $30.7 million, while the Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority is set to get $25 million. Veronica Vanterpool, the acting administrator of the Federal Transit Administration, emphasized the significance of investing in American-made green transportation to facilitate the growth of public transit usage. The grants are part of a larger federal initiative totaling $1.5 billion, directed towards supporting 117 public transportation projects in 47 states. Other Michigan projects benefitting from this program include the Harbor Transit Multi-Modal Transportation System in Grand Haven, which will receive $16 million to develop a multi-modal system operations center for transitioning to a zero-emission fleet. Additionally, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi is granted $539,000 to replace an old diesel-powered vehicle with a new clean diesel bus. The Federal Transit Administration has awarded nearly $5 billion in the last three years under the Infrastructure Law to enhance and modernize transit buses across the country, promoting the use of new technology built by American workers.
