The Michigan Infrastructure Office announced that several transit authorities in Michigan have been granted a total of $72.5 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration. This funding, part of President Biden's Investing in America agenda, aims to modernize bus fleets, build facilities, and deploy clean transit buses to reduce air pollution and support manufacturing jobs. The investments target improving transit systems' reliability and addressing environmental equity concerns across urban and rural communities in Michigan. Specifically, Detroit is set to receive $30.8 million to enhance fueling equipment and buses, including hydrogen buses, diesel, and electric hybrids. The initiative provides worker training on zero-emission technologies, emphasizing job creation and air quality improvement. In the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti area, $25 million will fund the deployment of hydrogen and hybrid buses, facilitating operational enhancements and a transition towards a zero-emission fleet. Additionally, Grand Haven's Harbor Transit Multi-Modal Transportation System will utilize $16.25 million to establish a zero-emission fleet by constructing a multi-modal system operations center with fueling and charging infrastructure, vehicle maintenance facilities, and electric vans. The comprehensive project aims to promote environmental sustainability, workforce development, and cleaner transportation alternatives.
