NFI Group has made a significant announcement regarding the expansion of its New Flyer production facility in Winnipeg, Canada. The expansion aims to facilitate the full Canadian assembly of Xcelsior transit buses, including a broader range of zero-emission buses. By repurposing existing space and adding a new finishing facility, production capacity is set to increase by up to 240 equivalent units annually by 2027. This development will enable NFI to manufacture battery-electric, fuel-cell electric, and trolley-electric buses for the Canadian market, aligning with the nation's zero-emission transit objectives. The construction has already commenced, with the first bus builds scheduled for late 2025, leading to full capacity production by 2027. The project has received support from the Government of Manitoba and Prairies Economic Development Canada, with both entities providing financial contributions to advance Manitoba's green economy and create around 250 new direct green jobs. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew emphasized the importance of projects like this in promoting a 'Made in Canada' approach towards a low-carbon economy. Overall, the investment of 25 million CAD from the government, along with NFI's own capital, will drive the expansion of production capacity and enhance the company's zero-emissions transit bus offerings.
