NHEV's Green Transport Revolution: Pioneering Electric, Hydrogen, and Zero-Emission Freight Vehicles in India
Key Ideas
  • NHEV's third technical trial on a 332 km route from Chennai to Trichy includes electric, hydrogen, and zero-emission vehicles to gather data for future deployment.
  • Focus on assessing cost efficiency, total cost of ownership, and infrastructure upgradation for electric, hydrogen, and zero-emission transport.
  • Collaboration with the Government of Tamil Nadu aims to bring significant investments in green surface transport and renewable charging infrastructure.
  • The initiative is expected to drive industry decarbonization and facilitate informed decision-making for stakeholders across various sectors.
National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV) is set to launch its third technical trial on September 9, covering a 332 km route from Chennai to Trichy. This trial will feature electric, hydrogen, and zero-emission freight vehicles in a bid to gather crucial data for future deployments. The initiative aims to support India's transition towards green transportation and upgrade e-highway infrastructure. The trial will focus on evaluating the cost efficiency of electric, hydrogen, and zero-emission vehicles compared to diesel, total cost of ownership for maintaining EV fleets, breakeven period for electric buses and trucks, and the upgradation costs of e-highway infrastructure. Collaborating with the Government of Tamil Nadu, the initiative seeks substantial investments in green surface transport and renewable charging infrastructure. The trial is expected to encourage industry sectors to embrace zero-emission transport and aid stakeholders in making informed decisions regarding the deployment of green technologies. NHEV's efforts align with the Government of India's goal to transform highways into E-Highways, with previous technical trials conducted on key corridors. The program operates on a Hybrid Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model and is expanding to cover 5,500 km of E-Highways across major routes.
