NTPC and Indian Army Collaborate for Solar Hydrogen Microgrid in Ladakh
Key Ideas
  • NTPC and the Indian Army are partnering to establish a solar hydrogen-based microgrid in Chushul, Ladakh, ensuring a stable power supply for off-grid Army locations.
  • The innovative system will utilize hydrogen as an energy storage medium to provide round-the-clock 200 kW power, supporting soldiers stationed in tough terrains for 25 years.
  • This initiative aims to integrate renewable energy sources, reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy self-sufficiency, and provide consistent power supply in remote areas.
  • NTPC is also launching a hydrogen bus trial in Leh, alongside a hydrogen fuelling station and solar plant, advancing sustainable transportation solutions in the region.
NTPC, in collaboration with the Indian Army, is embarking on a pioneering project to set up a solar hydrogen-based microgrid in Chushul, Ladakh. This initiative, inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, aims to provide a reliable and green power supply to the off-grid Army locations in the region. By utilizing hydrogen as an energy storage medium, the microgrid will be capable of supplying 200 kW of power continuously throughout the year, ensuring the seamless operation of critical infrastructure for the soldiers stationed in challenging terrains. NTPC plans to maintain this system for 25 years, emphasizing its commitment to supporting the defense forces in remote areas. The integration of renewable energy sources in this project not only guarantees a stable power supply but also contributes to reducing carbon emissions, fostering sustainability. Furthermore, the deployment of hydrogen technology eliminates the need for frequent fuel logistics, promoting self-sufficiency in regions prone to road disruptions. In parallel, NTPC is spearheading the introduction of hydrogen-powered transportation in the area, with the trial run of a hydrogen bus in Leh and the establishment of a hydrogen fuelling station and solar plant. These initiatives signify a significant step towards sustainable development and energy innovation in the Ladakh region, showcasing the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy solution.
