The Odisha Government has taken a significant step towards green energy by signing an agreement to introduce hydrogen-powered buses in Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, India. The tripartite MoU signed between NTPC Limited, GRIDCO Limited, and Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) aims to implement innovative green energy technologies, with a primary focus on transforming the public transport system. NTPC will be responsible for hydrogen production, GRIDCO for renewable energy supply, and CRUT for bus operations. The planned deployment includes three hydrogen fuel cell buses designed to offer a sustainable alternative to traditional diesel buses, with a 600 km range. These buses will be equipped with a 150 kW drive motor and 80 kW fuel cell capacity, providing a seating capacity for 42 passengers. NTPC will establish a hydrogen production plant at the Gadakana depot, utilizing existing treatment plants for green hydrogen generation. The collaborative effort includes support from the Energy Department, requesting land lease for renewable energy projects, and GRIDCO ensuring power connectivity and water supply. This initiative signifies a positive step towards sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation in Odisha.
