The Port of Brisbane is set to host a new hydrogen fuel station following a partnership between Lion Energy, Mitsubishi, and Samsung. The project will focus on green hydrogen production and dispensing infrastructure to serve buses, trucks, and heavy vehicles, targeting an annual production of over 300 tonnes of hydrogen. Queensland's energy minister, Mick de Brenni, sees this initiative as a significant step towards establishing an east coast hydrogen superhighway in Australia, with the aim of reducing emissions and generating energy jobs in the state. Lion Energy has received government approvals and secured a financial contract amounting to $3.7 million with Mitsubishi and Samsung to develop the hub. The company has also signed a long-term lease with the Port of Brisbane for the project's implementation. Lion Energy's executive chairman, Tom Soulsby, expressed enthusiasm about partnering with Mitsubishi and Samsung, highlighting their expertise and confidence in the potential of green hydrogen in Australia. Plans are in place to replicate similar hydrogen stations in Sydney and Melbourne, demonstrating the company's commitment to expanding green hydrogen infrastructure. Soulsby anticipates growing interest in green hydrogen production, with a focus on displacing grey hydrogen usage in various sectors such as industrial applications, fuel cell gensets, and heavy transportation. Lion Energy aims to announce further details on offtake agreements by Q3 2024, reflecting positive market reception towards green hydrogen solutions.
