The Greek Infrastructure Minister, Christos Staikouras, has highlighted various initiatives to revamp public transportation in Greece, with a particular focus on the Athens Metro and Thessaloniki Metro. Plans include investing approximately 60 million euros to enhance the Athens Metro by adding air conditioning to 24 trains, renewing 14 trains on Line 1, and upgrading escalators and elevators. In Thessaloniki, the delivery of 13 stations and trains is expected by November 2024, with further extensions planned for 2025. The introduction of electric buses has been a prominent aspect, with 250 electric buses already operational in Athens and Thessaloniki. Additionally, there are plans for 700 new buses in the future, including a provision for 50 to 100 hydrogen buses. Efforts are also being made to improve accessibility for the disabled by ensuring that all new buses will be accessible. The Transport Minister aims to strike a balance between enhancing the quality and frequency of bus routes while gradually phasing out older buses. These initiatives signify a comprehensive renewal and modernization of the public transportation system in Greece, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and improved service quality.
