Rochester-Genesee RTA Secures Federal Grant for Hydrogen Buses
Key Ideas
  • The Rochester-Genesee RTA received an $18.1 million federal grant to purchase three hydrogen fuel cell electric buses and upgrade their hydrogen fuel cell facility.
  • This funding aligns with the organization's goal of achieving a zero-emission fleet by 2040.
  • The purchase of hydrogen buses will be complemented by infrastructure upgrades to support the storage and maintenance of these vehicles.
  • Hydrogen fuel cell electric buses offer similar refueling times and driving ranges to diesel buses, with a 6-12 minute refueling time and a range of 250-300 miles.
The Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority (RGRTA) has secured an $18,113,192 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Buses & Bus Facilities Grant Program. This grant will enable RGRTA to purchase three hydrogen fuel cell electric buses and enhance its hydrogen fuel cell electric bus facility. Earlier, the agency had received $5 million in federal highway funding through the New York State Department of Transportation for four hydrogen fuel cell electric buses. These investments are crucial steps towards RGRTA's ambition of a zero-emission fleet by 2040. The announcement was made by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and Rep. Joe Morelle. RGRTA's CEO, Miguel Velazquez, emphasized the importance of adequate funding for infrastructure upgrades, new infrastructure needs, and zero-emission vehicle procurement. The grant will not only facilitate the purchase of three hydrogen buses but also finance the enhancement of existing facilities to accommodate the storage and maintenance of these buses. RGRTA highlights that hydrogen fuel cell electric buses offer comparable refueling times and driving ranges to diesel buses, with a refueling time of 6-12 minutes and a range of 250-300 miles.
