RWE and Westfalen Group Launch First Hydrogen Filling Hub in Lingen
Key Ideas
  • RWE and Westfalen Group are collaborating to build the "H2 Filling Hub Lingen" at the Emsland gas-fired power plant site, providing green hydrogen for commercial vehicles.
  • The project is part of the National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology and the German Recovery and Resilience Plan, receiving a total funding of €6 million.
  • The hydrogen refuelling station aims to support the transition to hydrogen-based transportation by offering a daily capacity of up to 500 kilograms, enabling efficient fueling for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
  • The joint venture between RWE and Westfalen Group, named "two4H2," signifies the companies' commitment to expanding the hydrogen fuel station network in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.
RWE and Westfalen Group have initiated the construction of a hydrogen fuel station and filling line at the Emsland gas-fired power plant site in Lingen. The 'H2 Filling Hub Lingen' will consist of a public hydrogen refuelling station for commercial vehicles and a filling station for tanker vehicles. Green hydrogen sourced from RWE's upcoming pilot electrolyser in Lingen will fuel these stations. The refuelling station targets operators of hydrogen-powered trucks, waste collection vehicles, buses, and cars. Companies with purchase agreements will be able to collect hydrogen from the filling station starting in mid-2025. The project is financially backed by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs and aligned with the National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. RWE and Westfalen AG are jointly developing and constructing the facility, with RWE as the owner and Westfalen in charge of operations. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards a hydrogen-centric future in Germany and Europe. The 'two4H2' joint venture between the two companies aims to expand the hydrogen fuel station network. The refuelling station has a capacity of processing up to 500 kilograms of hydrogen per day, supporting the growing demand for hydrogen in transportation. Overall, the initiative showcases a positive shift towards sustainable energy solutions and paves the way for a hydrogen-powered future in the region.
