Santa Cruz Metro CEO Corey Aldridge acknowledged that the agency faced setbacks in implementing service changes due to maintenance issues with its aging bus fleet. The delays were attributed to the fleet's increased breakdowns and the additional maintenance required. The agency had paused plans to expand services on certain routes. Despite these challenges, the agency's Reimagine Metro program aimed at doubling the annual ridership to 7 million rides with more efficient service. The final phase of changes, originally set for December, was postponed due to the bus fleet's limitations. Aldridge highlighted the importance of effective coordination among departments to tackle such ambitious projects.
While facing these obstacles, Santa Cruz Metro is actively working on solutions. Additional maintenance shifts have been introduced to address fleet issues, and the agency is set to receive 53 new hydrogen fuel-cell buses to move towards a zero-emission public transit system. Although only a few hydrogen buses are currently undergoing testing, Aldridge remains confident in the agency's ability to complete the service changes by September. Despite the challenges and delays, Aldridge emphasized that 90% of the Reimagine Metro changes have already been successfully implemented, showcasing progress amidst the hurdles.
