Sarawak's premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, has underscored the importance of seeking alternatives to diesel fuel in light of ongoing subsidy rationalisation efforts in Malaysia. Abang Johari advocates for hydrogen as a viable renewable energy source, emphasizing the need to reduce production costs to make it a competitive option. He believes that once the cost of hydrogen can be lowered, there will be no requirement for petrol and diesel subsidies. The state government, in partnership with Petronas, has successfully decreased the electricity demand for hydrogen production, leading to a 50% reduction in production costs and enhancing its viability as an energy source. Additionally, efforts are underway to introduce hydrogen refuelling stations and public buses in Peninsular Malaysia, signaling a shift towards exploring hydrogen as a sustainable energy solution. The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation has announced plans for hydrogen infrastructure deployment, including hydrogen vehicles for trial runs once the infrastructure is operational. Moreover, Sarawak has already embraced hydrogen technology by welcoming the first four units of the second-generation Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle in Malaysia. This proactive approach towards hydrogen adoption showcases Malaysia's commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy sources and reducing dependency on traditional fossil fuels.
