In Kuching, Malaysia, the State Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, expressed optimism about the potential of hydrogen buses as a greener public transport alternative. He highlighted expectations of reduced costs in the long run, attributing this to recent progress in hydrogen production and fuel cell technology that is anticipated to enhance efficiency and lower operational expenses. Stressing the alignment with Sarawak's green economy roadmap, Lee emphasized the significance of seizing the opportunity to establish a competitive edge by embracing sustainable options like hydrogen buses. This move aims to position Sarawak as an active participant in the global green economy sphere. The minister's statements came in response to suggestions by DAP's Padungan assemblyman, Chong Chieng Jen, advocating for the replacement of hydrogen buses with electric ones in the Kuching Urban Transportation System project. Despite Chong's reference to past failures of hydrogen buses in 10 city authorities, Lee countered by pointing out the outdated nature of the data, dating back to 2001. He emphasized that the 2021 landscape, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic with reduced ridership, required consideration of recent advancements in hydrogen technology.
