SwRI's H2HD REFUEL Initiative: Pioneering Heavy-Duty Hydrogen Fueling Solutions
Key Ideas
- SwRI launches a JIP to enhance fueling technologies for hydrogen heavy-duty vehicles, aligning with decarbonization goals.
- The program aims to address technical challenges in hydrogen refueling stations and explore alternative solutions over four years.
- Industry collaboration will lead to innovative and compatible hydrogen refueling technologies for heavy-duty vehicles.
Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is initiating a joint industry project (JIP) named H2HD REFUEL to boost hydrogen fueling technologies for heavy-duty vehicles. The project aims to support the adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source in the mobility sector and assist in achieving decarbonization goals. Dr. Thomas E. Briggs, Jr., highlights the need for enhanced hydrogen refueling stations specialized for heavy-duty vehicles due to existing technical challenges and infrastructure limitations. The JIP will engage stakeholders from vehicle manufacturers, OEMs, and refueling station operators to develop reliable and innovative hydrogen refueling solutions.
Over the next four years, SwRI researchers will conduct experiments and theoretical studies to enhance existing hydrogen refueling station equipment and procedures. They will also explore various onboard hydrogen storage methods and investigate the performance of refueling station components. Angel Wileman emphasizes the importance of collaboration in refining hydrogen refueling technologies to meet the rising demand for heavy-duty hydrogen vehicles.
Members of the H2HD REFUEL program will have access to state-of-the-art research, workshops, and networking opportunities, enabling them to stay at the forefront of hydrogen storage technologies. This collaborative effort by SwRI signifies a significant step towards advancing hydrogen energy research and bridging the technology gap in heavy-duty hydrogen refueling infrastructure. The initiative is expected to revolutionize the industry by creating efficient and safe hydrogen refueling solutions for heavy-duty vehicles.
