Tata Motors' Commercial Vehicles division in India is embarking on a pilot project in collaboration with IOCL to introduce trucks powered by hydrogen internal combustion engines. This initiative aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission and aims to assess the viability of hydrogen-powered trucks on three key routes, including Mumbai-Pune, Jamshedpur-Kalinganagar, and Mumbai-Ahmedabad over an 18-month period. The primary goal is to collect crucial operational data and identify the necessary infrastructure for refueling to support the potential future adoption of hydrogen trucks in the commercial sector. Tata Motors has already ventured into hydrogen-powered vehicles with 15 fuel cell electric buses in partnership with IOCL. The upcoming pilot project is expected to feature the Prima H.555 truck, utilizing a Cummins B6.7LH hydrogen IC engine known for its power output of 216 kW and peak torque of 1200 Nm. This move signifies Tata's commitment to embracing environmentally friendly technologies and reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector. Looking ahead, Tata Motors is planning to commercialize hydrogen fuel truck models by 2027, marking a significant milestone in the Indian automotive industry's transition towards sustainable mobility solutions. By integrating hydrogen-powered vehicles into their lineup, Tata Motors is poised to contribute to a greener and more eco-conscious transportation ecosystem.
