The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) and Veolia have joined forces to pioneer Hong Kong's green hydrogen revolution in response to the HKSAR Government's hydrogen development strategy. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish Hong Kong's inaugural green hydrogen project at the South East New Territories Landfill Extension (SENTX) in Tseung Kwan O. By harnessing biogas for green hydrogen production and advocating for various hydrogen energy applications, the venture aims to convert waste into energy, aligning with the Government's environmental goals. The project, endorsed by the Inter-departmental Working Group on Using Hydrogen as Fuel, will feature a new hydrogen production unit, transmission facilities, and a refuelling station at the SENTX Landfill. Through the utilization of steam methane reforming technology, biogas from the landfill will be transformed into green hydrogen, marking a significant environmental milestone in Hong Kong. The inaugural green hydrogen project anticipates a daily output of approximately 330 kg of hydrogen, ample to fuel several hydrogen buses throughout a day. The collaboration between Towngas and Veolia, under the guidance of the Ministry of Environment and Ecology, is positioned as a pioneer initiative in advancing Hong Kong's low-carbon hydrogen energy domain. The project's significance extends beyond immediate implementation, with the potential for replication in additional landfills and applications, emphasizing the critical role of partnerships in expediting decarbonization efforts. The success of this green hydrogen venture is poised to contribute significantly to Hong Kong's carbon reduction targets by 2035 and eventual carbon neutrality by 2050, underscoring the pivotal role of green hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.
