TriMet, the transit agency in Portland, Oregon, has introduced 24 new battery-electric buses (BEBs) to enhance sustainable transportation in the city. The BEBs, manufactured by GILLIG, provide passengers with a quiet and comfortable ride between downtown Portland and the Gresham Central Transit Center. These buses come equipped with advanced lithium-ion battery packs, allowing for a range of more than 150 miles on a single charge, and offer 33% more battery capacity than previous models.
In line with its environmental goals, TriMet aims to transition to a fully zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040. To support this initiative, the agency has secured a $39 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration, enabling the purchase of 14 hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses by the end of the decade. These buses will operate along the busy 82nd Ave. corridor in Portland.
Additionally, TriMet received a $25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to develop its Columbia Operations Facility, further supporting the transition to zero-emissions buses. The agency is actively replacing older diesel buses with sustainable options, highlighting its commitment to reducing emissions and improving air quality in the region. TriMet's efforts underscore a significant step towards a greener and more environmentally friendly public transportation system in Portland.
