TriMet has begun its journey towards a zero-emissions bus fleet by introducing 24 new battery-electric buses on Line 9 in Portland. These e-buses, sourced from American manufacturer GILLIG, operate on 100% renewable electricity, contributing to reduced air pollution and improved air quality in the region. The buses are equipped with lithium-ion battery packs and have a range of over 150 miles on a single charge. TriMet plans to replace older diesel buses with these new e-buses, aiming for a fully zero-emissions fleet by 2040. Additionally, the company has secured federal grants to purchase 14 hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses that will operate along 82nd Avenue by 2029, furthering their commitment to sustainable transportation. The grants will also facilitate infrastructure upgrades, including charging stations and operations facilities, to support the transition to zero-emission buses.
