York Region Transit Receives Funding for Electric Bus Fleet Expansion
Key Ideas
- YRT receives C$76 million from Canada's Zero Emission Transit Fund to increase its electric bus fleet, totaling C$389 million with other contributions.
- The fund will support adding 180 electric buses, installing charging stations, and upgrading facilities with solar power and battery storage.
- YRT's initiative aims to reduce emissions by 16,000 metric tons annually, equivalent to removing 4,000 vehicles from the road, aligning with York Region's goal of net-zero emissions by 2051.
York Region Transit (YRT) in Canada has secured C$76 million from the country's Zero Emission Transit Fund to bolster its electric bus fleet. This funding, combined with contributions from the Canada Infrastructure Bank and York Region, raises the total budget for the Zero-emission bus program to C$389 million. The investment will facilitate the addition of 180 electric buses, bringing the total count to 194, along with the installation of charging stations across the York Region. Moreover, YRT plans to enhance its facilities by incorporating solar power and battery storage systems. YRT initiated an electric bus pilot program in 2019, expanding steadily since then. The ongoing procurement and deployment of electric buses align with York Region's objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2051. The introduction of these new buses is projected to slash emissions by approximately 16,000 metric tons annually, which is tantamount to eliminating about 4,000 vehicles from the streets, marking a significant stride towards environmental sustainability.
