ABB has joined forces with Stadler US to revolutionize rail transport sustainability in the United States by introducing innovative battery-powered and hydrogen trains. The collaboration focuses on providing traction systems for eco-friendly trains in Illinois and California. In Illinois, Metra has made a significant move by ordering eight two-car battery-powered trainsets that will utilize ABB's Pro 8C batteries and CC750 DC traction converters to enhance energy efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. Meanwhile, in California, Caltrans has entered a historic agreement with Stadler US for a fleet of 10 hydrogen-powered trains. ABB will supply Pro 8C traction batteries and DC traction converters, such as CC750 and CC400, to facilitate efficient propulsion and reduce emissions. These components will be manufactured and tested at ABB's facility in Mechanicsville, Virginia, where close to 100 skilled workers are employed. The partnership reflects ABB's commitment to investing in sustainable solutions, with significant financial allocations in US plant expansions, equipment, and the workforce. Edgar Keller, President of ABB Traction, and Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler North America, have both highlighted the pivotal role of this collaboration in advancing cleaner transport options and fostering a sustainable future for public transportation in the country.
