Caltrans signed a contract with Stadler US in 2024 to acquire zero-emission, hydrogen-powered passenger trains for operation in California. ABB will supply traction converters and Pro Series Traction Batteries for the new trains. Similarly, in Illinois, Metra will operate full battery-powered trainsets with the help of ABB's traction equipment under a collaboration with Stadler US. The order includes eight two-car trainsets equipped with Pro 8C batteries and CC750 DC traction converters, all designed to optimize performance and reduce CO2 emissions. ABB will supply traction equipment for both the Caltrans hydrogen-powered trains and the Metra battery-powered trains, contributing to more sustainable transportation solutions. The incorporation of hydrogen and battery technology showcases a positive step towards reducing emissions and improving the efficiency of rail transport in California and Illinois.
