Challenges and Hopes for Hydrogen-Powered Trains in the Kalka-Shimla Heritage Section
Key Ideas
  • The introduction of hydrogen-powered trains on the Kalka-Shimla section of the Ambala Division, though announced two years ago, is still in its initial stages with three hydrogen fuel station sites identified.
  • Feasibility assessments favored hydrogen or battery-powered trains over electrification due to the challenges posed by the region's terrain and the potential harm to the heritage value of the railway.
  • Indian Railways aims to achieve zero carbon emissions by introducing hydrogen-powered trains, emphasizing the environmental benefits of using hydrogen as a clean fuel source.
  • While the initial running costs of hydrogen-fuelled train sets may be high, Indian Railways expects costs to decrease as more trains are introduced on the scenic Kalka-Shimla heritage section.
The introduction of hydrogen-powered trains on the iconic Kalka-Shimla Railway in India's Ambala Division is facing delays despite being announced over two years ago. The project, aimed at replacing diesel locomotives with zero-emission hydrogen trains, is still in its initial stages. The railway officials have identified three sites for hydrogen fuel stations at Kalka, Shimla, and Barog, but significant progress is yet to be made. The challenging terrain of the Kalka-Shimla route, which features 102 tunnels, has made overhead electrification extremely difficult. A hired agency recommended alternative solutions like hydrogen or battery-powered trains to preserve the railway's heritage value and reduce carbon emissions. Indian Railways is committed to achieving zero carbon emissions and is actively working on introducing hydrogen-powered trains on this heritage section. The hydrogen-powered train will utilize fuel cells that combine hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. Despite the expected high initial costs, Indian Railways anticipates cost reductions as more hydrogen trains are deployed. The project aligns with the organization's goal of reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to cleaner energy sources. The development of a detailed project report is underway to finalize the fueling sites, capacity, and technical aspects of the hydrogen-powered train initiative.
