FCHRAIL Wins Best Innovation Award for Climate-Friendly Rail Technology
Key Ideas
  • FCHRAIL project consortium receives Best Innovation Award for the development of a hybrid drive for trains, enabling eco-friendly rail transport.
  • CAF and CNH2's test system for fuel cell hybrid PowerPacks was crucial in validating system performance and optimizing energy management.
  • The award was presented during the European Hydrogen Week 2024, highlighting the importance of clean hydrogen technologies in the transportation sector.
The FCHRAIL project consortium, coordinated by DLR, was recently honored with the Best Innovation Award by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership for their work on the FCH2Rail project. This joint effort between industry and research focused on developing a hybrid drive for trains, providing a climate-friendly alternative to diesel vehicles for rail transport. CAF and CNH2 contributed to the project by developing a test system for fuel cell hybrid PowerPacks, allowing for performance testing of individual components and the entire system. The system played a vital role in validating the performance of the technology and optimizing energy management. The award ceremony took place during the European Hydrogen Week 2024, underscoring the significance of clean hydrogen applications in the transportation sector. Beatriz Nieto Calderón of CNH2, Manex Zabala Mikeleiz of CAF, and Hong Hanus from DLR accepted the award on behalf of the project team, recognizing their innovative contributions to sustainable rail technology.
