Fortescue's FMG Hub in Perth: Pioneering Hydrogen and Lithium Production
Key Ideas
  • Fortescue's hydrogen research hub in Perth is at the forefront of trialing green energy technologies for various applications in the mining sector.
  • Australia's resource-rich state of Western Australia is a major player in global iron ore and lithium exports, with top mining companies like BHP and Rio Tinto operating in the region.
  • The initiative by Fortescue to develop a hydrogen-powered haul truck prototype is a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in the mining industry.
  • Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia's lithium hydroxide production plant is a key player in Australia's lithium market, with plans for significant production expansion.
During his visit to Western Australia, China's Premier Li Qiang toured Fortescue's FMG hydrogen research hub in Perth, which is focused on developing green energy solutions for mining operations. The hub is actively testing technologies related to hydrogen, ammonia, and battery power for various heavy machinery used in the mining industry, aiming to reduce reliance on diesel fuel. Fortescue, one of the world's largest iron ore miners, is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 by focusing on emissions reduction on-site and through power consumption. The company recently unveiled a hydrogen-powered haul truck prototype named 'Europa,' equipped with advanced technology including a 1.6 megawatt battery, 500 kilowatts of fuel cells, and a large liquid hydrogen storage capacity. Premier Li also visited Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia's lithium hydroxide production facility, which is a significant player in the country's lithium market. The plant has plans to ramp up production to 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year and is considering expansion with additional production trains. Alongside the lithium hydroxide plant, Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia owns a major stake in the Greenbushes lithium mine, which is among the world's largest lithium deposits and a key asset in the global lithium supply chain. The visit highlights the growing importance of green energy and lithium production in Western Australia's mining sector, with companies like Fortescue and Tianqi leading the way in innovation and sustainability.
