Indian Railways is making a groundbreaking move towards sustainable travel with the launch of India's first hydrogen train scheduled for December 2024. The hydrogen-powered train, operated without diesel or electricity, will use water as its primary resource for power generation, producing only steam and water as emission byproducts, thereby significantly reducing harmful emissions. This initiative aligns with Indian Railways' goal of becoming a net zero carbon emitter by 2030, showcasing a commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation in the transportation sector. The trial run on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, covering 90 kilometres, will mark the beginning of this eco-friendly journey. Plans for expansion include operating 35 hydrogen trains across various routes by 2025, with comparable speed and passenger capacity to traditional diesel trains, ensuring efficiency without compromising on environmental principles. This move highlights a shift towards a more sustainable future for public transportation in India, offering passengers a swift, comfortable, and environmentally friendly mode of travel.
