Indian Railways has made significant progress in the development of hydrogen fuel-run trains, aiming to revolutionize green transportation technology. The project, named 'Hydrogen for Heritage,' plans to introduce 35 hydrogen trains across heritage and hill routes in India. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the achievement at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bhubaneswar, stating that the Indian-made hydrogen train engine boasts the highest capacity globally at 1200 horsepower. The initiative is a crucial step towards achieving zero carbon emissions, with the Ministry of Railways allocating a substantial amount of Rs 2800 crore for the project. Additionally, an investment of Rs 600 crore will be made to establish hydrogen infrastructure for heritage routes. The first hydrogen train is designated for the Northern Railway's Delhi Division, with plans to operate on the Jind-Sonipat section. India's foray into hydrogen train technology is groundbreaking, as most countries have engines with capacities ranging from 500 to 600 horsepower. The ambitious project reflects India's engineering prowess and commitment to sustainability. The inaugural hydrogen train is slated for launch in the upcoming financial year, signaling a significant stride towards a greener future in Indian transportation.
