India is making significant strides in sustainable transportation with the introduction of hydrogen-powered trains. The Ministry of Railways has allocated Rs 2800 crore to develop 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains in the fiscal year 2023-24, marking a shift towards green technology. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai is at the forefront of this initiative, working on manufacturing India's first hydrogen train set. The aim is to leverage hydrogen as a clean energy source to achieve zero carbon emission goals. With the creation of a hydrogen-powered train engine boasting a remarkable 1,200 horsepower, India has surpassed other countries in engine capacity, showcasing its innovation in the field. The launch of the first hydrogen train in India is imminent, with plans for it to operate on the 89-km-long Jind-Sonipat section under the Northern Railway's Delhi Division. This milestone signifies a new era of mobility for Indian Railways, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly modes of transportation.
