The Stadler hydrogen-fuel-cell powered FLIRT H2 trainset, having made its debut in Berlin, has reached San Bernardino for testing on the Arrow commuter rail line in Southern California. This first-of-its-kind zero-emission multiple-unit (ZEMU) trainset, which was initially showcased at a trade fair in Berlin and later tested in Europe before arriving in the U.S., notably set a distance record of over 1,700 miles without refueling or recharging during its testing in Pueblo, Colorado. Following its arrival in San Bernardino, SBCTA President Ray Marquez expressed excitement about the train's potential impact on promoting environmentally friendly transportation solutions in the region. The trainset is scheduled to undergo final testing, including trips on the 9-mile Arrow route and system checks on Metrolink, with the target of being operational later this year. This innovative addition will complement the existing diesel-powered FLIRT trainsets already servicing the Arrow line, further advancing the region's railway technology and environmental initiatives.
