Cemex UK has unveiled plans to implement hydrogen on an industrial scale at its Rugby cement plant in Warwickshire, signaling a significant step towards decarbonisation. The company will collaborate with HiiROC, a UK-based start-up specializing in carbon-neutral hydrogen production through its proprietary Thermal Plasma Electrolysis process. This innovative approach boasts enhanced energy efficiency, requiring only 20% of the electrical energy used in conventional water electrolysis, while also capturing carbon as a solid byproduct, thereby avoiding CO2 emissions. HiiROC's modular solution enables flexible deployment, making it adaptable for various industrial settings. The hydrogen generated will serve as an eco-friendly alternative energy source to power clinker production processes, aligning with Cemex's ambitious goal of achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
