EET Fuels Advances Hydrogen Fuel Switching at Stanlow Refinery
Key Ideas
  • EET Fuels, under Essar Oil UK, progresses to the FEED stage for its Hydrogen Fuel Switching project at Stanlow Refinery to achieve a 95% CO2 emissions reduction by 2030.
  • The hydrogen for the project will be supplied by EET Hydrogen, the company's low carbon hydrogen production unit, with Wood coordinating the final designs for the hydrogen fuel system.
  • The project aims to integrate a hydrogen-ready crude distiller furnace at Stanlow, capable of operating on 100% hydrogen or a fuel-gas mix, to significantly cut emissions, with an expected reduction of 0.2 million tonnes per year.
  • The completion of the FEED phase is expected to lead to a final investment decision in the following year, aligning with EET Fuels' strategic plans for decarbonisation and energy transition at the Stanlow Refinery.
EET Fuels, operating as Essar Oil UK, has made significant progress in its plan to transform Stanlow Refinery into a leading low carbon process refinery. The company has entered the front-end engineering design (FEED) stage for its Hydrogen Fuel Switching project as part of its broader strategy to reduce CO2 emissions by 95% by 2030. EET Hydrogen, the company's co-located low carbon hydrogen production unit, will supply the required hydrogen for the project. Wood, a global consulting and engineering firm, has been appointed to coordinate the final designs for the hydrogen fuel system. The project includes the integration of a hydrogen-ready crude distiller furnace at Stanlow, a first in any UK refinery, capable of operating on pure hydrogen or a fuel-gas mix. The hydrogen furnace is expected to reduce emissions by 0.2 million tonnes per year. EET Fuels anticipates that the completion of the FEED phase will pave the way for a final investment decision in the upcoming year. Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of EET Fuels, expressed confidence in the project's advancement, highlighting the importance of Hydrogen Fuel Switching in their UK plans. Martin Simmonite, Senior Vice President for UK Operations at Wood, emphasized the significance of this decarbonisation project in supporting the energy transition and enhancing UK energy security.
