Egypt has announced the launch of a comprehensive national low-carbon hydrogen strategy under its 'Egypt Vision 2030' initiative. The Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, revealed that the strategy aims to steer Egypt towards a more sustainable energy portfolio while aligning with climate change objectives. Key elements of the strategy include a focus on increasing domestic hydrogen production and consumption, starting with strengthening the local green hydrogen market before progressing towards exports. The government believes that this strategy will have a significant positive economic impact, potentially boosting the GDP by $18 billion and creating around 100,000 jobs by the year 2040. Furthermore, the initiative is expected to improve energy security and draw substantial foreign investment into the country's hydrogen sector. Egypt envisions establishing itself as a global frontrunner in green hydrogen, taking advantage of strategic locations such as the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Notably, the Zone has already secured a substantial contract amounting to 397 million euros for exporting green fuel to Europe, demonstrating Egypt's commitment to playing a pivotal role in the global green energy market. The strategy's development involved collaboration with international partners, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, showcasing Egypt's dedication to following global sustainability trends and fulfilling its environmental obligations.
