South Africa is taking notable strides in developing its hydrogen economy with a strong emphasis on community engagement and economic upliftment. The pilot project in Masia Village, Limpopo, is a prime example of integrating cutting-edge technologies like hydrogen electrolysers and solar PV systems to power agricultural activities and community centers. Spearheaded by the South African National Energy Development Institute (Sanedi), in collaboration with the University of Limpopo and local stakeholders, the project aims to stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities in the region. The community's positive reception of the project reflects their recognition of the benefits of clean energy despite not fully understanding the technical aspects. South Africa is committing substantial resources to establish a sustainable hydrogen economy, with a significant portion of its Just Energy Transition Investment Plan dedicated to the emerging green hydrogen market. The country's community-based approach aligns with the Hydrogen Society Roadmap, focusing on localised production and inclusive access to the benefits of the hydrogen industry.
