EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, is on a visit to Namibia and will further travel to South Africa to strengthen the EU's energy relations with these countries. The EU-Namibia strategic partnership on sustainable raw materials value chains and renewable hydrogen, endorsed by commission president Ursula von der Leyen and late president Hage Geingob, is supported by €1 billion in investments from the EU, its member states, and European financial institutions. Simson's itinerary includes participation in the Global African Hydrogen Summit in Windhoek, panel discussions on energy transition, and attendance at a ministerial panel on Africa's hydrogen and clean energy frontiers. The visit will also involve the signing ceremony of EU-funded programs to support clean energy transition and hydrogen development in Namibia. Additionally, Simson will visit energy-related projects such as the HyIron site for green iron production and the Port of Walvis Bay to support its transformation into an industrial and logistics hub. The commissioner will also engage with the Towards an Inclusive Design of the Renewable Energy Transition project, focusing on expanding clean energy access in vulnerable communities. The visit will include meetings with Namibian authorities, companies, and civil society organizations to strengthen partnerships and promote sustainable energy initiatives.
