EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, has authorized €53.9m of funding to drive the development of green hydrogen and renewables in southern Africa. Namibia will be the primary recipient of €36.9m. The EU commission has committed €50m to hydrogen-focused funds in Namibia and South Africa, with a significant portion earmarked for the SDG Namibia One fund to progress hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and related industries. The objective is to raise €1bn for the 3GW Hyphen Hydrogen Energy project, which is projected to require $10bn. The European Investment Bank and Invest International have collectively contributed €540m to this initiative, anticipated to secure a final investment decision by 2025. Simson also endorsed a €1.2m grant for the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme, aiming to establish effective mechanisms for steering and regulating the green hydrogen sector. The EU's support aligns with driving Namibia's green industrialization, enhancing energy security, and fostering prosperity in line with the Harambee Prosperity Plan and Vision 2030. Germany has recognized the strategic importance of the Hyphen Hydrogen Energy project, developed by a partnership of Enertrag, Nicholas Holdings, RWE, and Approtium, labeling it a "strategic foreign project". The initiative signifies a collaborative effort to advance green energy in the region, with a vision to achieve sustainable and secure energy resources for the future.
