European Commission President von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa recently met with South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa in Cape Town for the EU-South Africa Summit. During the summit, a new Clean Trade and Investment Partnership was launched, as well as a €4.7 billion Global Gateway Investment Package to support clean energy transition and strategic industries. The focus of the investment package will include industries like batteries, renewables, and hydrogen, aligning with the goals of the Just Energy Transition Partnership between South Africa and key global players. The partnership aims to accelerate the decarbonization of South Africa's economy and create job opportunities in future-oriented sectors. South Africa will also see improvements in connectivity, particularly in the North-South Lubumbashi to Durban route, and advancements in the pharmaceutical industry to enhance local production of vaccines and medication. President von der Leyen emphasized the importance of local value chains and beneficiation, highlighting the mutual benefits for both South Africa and EU companies. Additionally, discussions revolved around the "Scaling up Renewables in Africa" campaign, aiming to tap into Africa's renewable energy potential. A pledging event is scheduled to take place during the upcoming G20 Summit in Johannesburg to garner global support for renewable energy initiatives in Africa.
