Italy and Tunisia have launched the Elmed project, a groundbreaking initiative establishing the first direct current electric connection between Europe and Africa. This strategic partnership aims to enhance renewable energy cooperation, reduce fossil fuel dependency, and support clean energy goals. The project involves a 200-kilometre submarine cable and forms part of Italy's Mattei Plan to boost collaboration in the Mediterranean region. Italian grid operator Terna and Tunisia's STEG are collaborating on this venture, focusing on developing the Terna Innovation Zone in Tunis to drive innovation and workforce growth. The initiative also aligns with Italy's ambition to lead Mediterranean energy cooperation and participate in projects like the South H2 Corridor for transporting green hydrogen from North Africa to Europe. The Terna Innovation Zone will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, research, and business development in the renewable energy sector, benefiting local startups and engineers. This collaboration underscores Italy's commitment to supporting Africa's energy transition and strengthening economic ties in the Mediterranean. Looking ahead, the hub plans to accelerate the growth of Tunisian startups and facilitate industrial partnerships to enhance energy security and innovation on a broader scale.
