Italy and Tunisia are joining forces in a significant partnership to accelerate the energy transition and promote the production of green hydrogen. Enel, Eni, and the Tunisian government have announced an ambitious pilot project for green hydrogen production in Tunisia, leveraging the country's solar radiation and strategic position. This initiative aligns with Tunisia's goal of producing 8 million tons of green hydrogen by 2050, requiring international collaboration due to budget limitations. The partnership emphasizes Italy's role as a fundamental hub for energy security in Europe, supported by investments in renewable energy sources and infrastructure development in Tunisia. One of the challenges faced is water stress in Tunisia, which necessitates the use of alternative water sources for electrolysis, such as wastewater reuse and seawater desalination. To address this, Tunisia has inaugurated desalination plants and planned water infrastructure projects to ensure a continuous water supply for green hydrogen production. Additionally, Italy's commitment to financing development projects and investing in Tunisian clean energy sources demonstrates a shared vision for a sustainable energy future. The collaboration extends to the construction of the Elmed 'energy bridge,' a power line between Sicily and Tunisia that will facilitate the transmission of clean energy. This project, with an investment of approximately 850 million euros, symbolizes the joint efforts to harness Tunisian renewables and create economic opportunities for both countries. The partnership not only focuses on energy production but also on strengthening infrastructure and connectivity between Italy and Tunisia, fostering a sustainable and mutually beneficial relationship.
