Oman has made significant strides in the green hydrogen sector with the establishment of Hydrom, a state-owned company dedicated to managing and developing the industry. By providing crucial infrastructure such as power grid capacity, water resources, and port facilities, Hydrom allows investors, including Actis, to concentrate on deploying renewable power generation, electrolyzers, and ammonia plants. The focus in Oman is on green hydrogen, produced from renewable energy sources, setting it apart from black hydrogen, derived from coal, and white hydrogen, which occurs naturally. The country has set ambitious goals to position itself as the world's sixth-largest hydrogen exporter by the year 2030, with a further aspiration to exceed liquefied natural gas sales by the year 2050. To achieve this, Oman will need to invest significantly in renewable power generation, electrolysis technology to extract hydrogen from water, and ammonia conversion processes necessary for hydrogen transportation. The International Energy Agency estimates that Oman's hydrogen sector will require investments totaling $20 billion for renewable power infrastructure and an additional $13 billion for electrolyzers and ammonia conversion. These investments are crucial for Oman to realize its hydrogen export potential and solidify its position in the global energy market.
