Unlocking Opportunities: South H2 Corridor Connects Europe and North Africa with Renewable Hydrogen
Key Ideas
  • Germany, Austria, and Italy signed a joint declaration in May 2024 to develop the South H2 Corridor, a 3,300-km renewable hydrogen pipeline to connect Europe and North Africa, aiding Europe in meeting its hydrogen import targets.
  • The project aims to utilize existing gas infrastructure in North Africa, tapping into the region's abundant solar and wind resources to provide cost-competitive renewable hydrogen, attracting international developers and electrolyser manufacturers.
  • Tunisia has made significant strides in renewable hydrogen projects, with multiple MoUs signed with international developers, propelling the country towards its national hydrogen strategy.
  • The upcoming Renewable Energy Forum Africa in Tunis on November 6-7, 2024, will gather African and international stakeholders to discuss the potential of renewable hydrogen, showcasing Africa's role in the global renewable energy landscape.
In May 2024, the Ministries responsible for energy in Germany, Austria, and Italy signed a significant joint declaration to enhance cooperation in developing the South H2 Corridor. This corridor, a 3,300-km renewable hydrogen pipeline, is set to connect the European Union with partners in North Africa. By repurposing existing midstream gas infrastructure in North Africa, the project aims to control costs efficiently. Leveraging the region's abundant solar and wind resources, the pipeline project will offer Europe up to 4 million tonnes per annum of renewable hydrogen, aligning with the EU's hydrogen import targets under the REPowerEU strategy. The project has attracted strong international interest, with multiple companies signing MoUs for hydrogen projects connected to the corridor in Tunisia and Algeria. Notably, developers like ABO Energy, Aker Horizons, TotalEnergies, and TuNur are advancing hydrogen projects in North Africa, particularly in Tunisia, which has shown accelerated deployment in renewable hydrogen projects. The upcoming Renewable Energy Forum Africa in Tunis on November 6-7, 2024, organized by AFSIA, MESIA, CSPV, and SolarPower Europe, will provide a platform for African and international stakeholders to discuss and explore the strategic potential of renewable hydrogen across Africa. This forum highlights Africa's increasing role in the global renewable energy landscape.
