Energy Ministers of APEC economies are convening to seek approval for two significant documents: the Energy Ministerial Declaration and a policy guide focused on the use of low-emission hydrogen in the Asia-Pacific region. The aim behind this initiative is to establish a new source of renewable clean energy, with a specific emphasis on industries like chemical, oil, transportation, and steel production. The policy guide will encompass public policy recommendations aiming to standardize certifications, regulations, and standards within the APEC economies, with a focus on addressing financial and technological challenges in the industry. Despite the water-intensive nature of hydrogen production through electrolysis, plans are underway to explore leveraging seawater through desalination processes to mitigate challenges and facilitate the decarbonization of key industries such as chemical, cement, and transportation sectors. Peru, in its role as the host of APEC 2024, is leading the charge in promoting green hydrogen as part of its commitment to fostering less polluting economic activities, aligning with the global shift towards cleaner energy sources powered by renewable energy like wind and solar.
