Australia and Germany Forge Energy Partnership for Hydrogen Auction System
Key Ideas
  • Australia and Germany have partnered to establish an auction system for hydrogen production, committing €200 million each.
  • The H2Global scheme aims to create trade corridors for renewable hydrogen and its derivatives between Australia and the EU.
  • The partnership is expected to boost renewable energy production in Australia and facilitate the growth of the hydrogen industry.
  • Government officials from both countries express optimism about the collaboration's potential to advance climate neutrality and the energy transition.
The governments of Australia and Germany have recently signed a bilateral energy cooperation deal to introduce an auction system for hydrogen production credits. This initiative, known as the H2Global scheme, involves each nation contributing €200 million to support hydrogen producers in generating renewable hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol. The primary objective of this partnership is to establish trade routes between Australia and the EU for renewable hydrogen and its derivatives, promoting the export of Australian hydrogen products to the EU while allowing the import of ammonia from the EU to Australia. The announcement was made by Australian Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen and German State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Anja Hajduk, during the Asia Pacific Hydrogen Conference in Brisbane. Both officials emphasized the significance of this collaboration in realizing Australia's potential as a renewable energy superpower and advancing the energy transition towards sustainability. The H2Global mechanism aims to subsidize production costs, thereby encouraging increased renewable energy production in Australia and fostering the growth of the hydrogen industry. The joint efforts of Australia and Germany signal a positive step towards achieving climate neutrality and driving innovation in the energy sector. This partnership is poised to strengthen international alliances, promote sustainable practices, and pave the way for a more environmentally conscious energy landscape.
