EBRD Financing Renewable Hydrogen Facility in Uzbekistan: Sustainable Innovation in Central Asia
Key Ideas
  • EBRD is financing the first renewable hydrogen facility in Central Asia, aiming to decarbonise Uzbekistan's fertiliser production and power generation sectors.
  • The project involves a 20 MW electrolyser and a 52 MW wind power plant, expected to produce 3,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually and reduce CO2 emissions by 22,000 tonnes.
  • The financial package of US$65 million includes funds from EBRD, Canada, and ACWA Power UKS Green H2, with support from Canada, Japan, and other countries under the HIPCA initiative.
  • The initiative reflects a shift towards sustainable energy solutions, replacing grey hydrogen with renewable hydrogen as a key alternative for decarbonisation in Uzbekistan.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing financing for a pioneering renewable hydrogen facility in Uzbekistan, in collaboration with ACWA Power UKS Green H2. The project aims to decarbonise the country's fertiliser production and power generation sectors by introducing renewable hydrogen. The facility will comprise a 20 MW electrolyser and a 52 MW wind power plant, with an anticipated annual production of 3,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen and a reduction of 22,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. The financial package of US$65 million includes a senior loan from EBRD, concessional finance from Canada under the HIPCA, and an equity bridge loan for the project. EBRD's Managing Director for the Sustainable Infrastructure Group, Nandita Parshad, highlighted the significance of this initiative in Central Asia, known for carbon-intensive industries. This venture marks EBRD's second renewable hydrogen project, with a previous facility in Egypt. By replacing grey hydrogen with renewable hydrogen, the project aligns with efforts to decarbonise the fertiliser production sector. The HIPCA initiative, supported by multiple countries including Canada and Japan, emphasizes the global commitment to climate action. Uzbekistan, a key recipient of EBRD funding in Central Asia, has shown a strong focus on private entrepreneurship. With investments amounting to around €5.0 billion in 164 projects, EBRD's support underscores sustainable innovation in the region.
