EBRD Funds Pioneering Renewable Hydrogen Facility in Uzbekistan
Key Ideas
  • The EBRD is financing a groundbreaking renewable hydrogen facility in Uzbekistan, featuring a 20 MW electrolyser and a 52 MW wind power plant.
  • The financial package of $65mn includes a senior loan from the EBRD and concessional finance from Canada's HIPCA fund.
  • The facility, managed by ACWA Power UKS Green H2, aims to replace grey hydrogen with renewable hydrogen, contributing to a significant reduction in carbon emissions in the fertiliser sector.
  • Once operational, the facility is expected to produce up to 3,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually and reduce CO2 emissions by about 22,000 tonnes each year.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is taking a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in Uzbekistan by financing a pioneering renewable hydrogen facility. This initiative, marking a milestone in Central Asia, will consist of a 20 MW electrolyser and a 52 MW wind power plant, demonstrating the country's commitment to energy transition. The EBRD has allocated a financial package of $65mn, including a senior loan of $55mn and up to $10mn in concessional finance from Canada's High Impact Partnership on Climate Action (HIPCA) fund. Managed by ACWA Power UKS Green H2, a joint venture between ACWA Power and Uzkimyosanoat, the facility aims to replace grey hydrogen with renewable hydrogen, thereby reducing carbon emissions in the ammonia fertiliser production sector. It is projected that the facility will generate around 3,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually and lead to a decrease of approximately 22,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year once it becomes operational.
