Enhancing Aviation Collaboration: Singapore-Japan Dialogue on Sustainable Air Travel
Key Ideas
- Singapore and Japan deepen collaboration in various aviation sectors to meet the growing demand for global air travel.
- Emphasis on sustainable aviation with a focus on sustainable aviation fuels and the exploration of hydrogen as a decarbonization pathway.
- Efforts to enhance aviation safety, improve air traffic management efficiency, and leverage technology for innovation in airport operations.
- Joint initiatives to develop regulations for the integration of unmanned aircraft systems and advanced air mobility operations with conventional aviation.
The 3rd Singapore-Japan Dialogue on Aviation Collaboration saw the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) agreeing to strengthen their partnership in multiple aviation domains. Both countries aim to enhance air connectivity, sustainable aviation, aviation safety, air traffic management, aviation innovation, and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and advanced air mobility (AAM) to cater to the expected doubling of global air travel demand in the next two decades. With a significant recovery in air travel between Singapore and Japan, the authorities foresee a full recovery by 2025 and plan to enhance flight punctuality and efficiency. Acknowledging the role of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in achieving net-zero emissions, CAAS and JCAB will explore more SAF feedstocks and production pathways, and initiate discussions on hydrogen as a complementary decarbonization avenue, focusing on hydrogen-powered airside vehicles. Collaboration efforts extend to improving aviation safety, optimizing air traffic management with User Preferred Route initiatives, fostering aviation innovation through technological advancements in airport operations, and developing regulations for the safe integration of UAS and AAM operations. The dialogue also highlighted Narita Airport's participation in the International Aviation Lab, enhancing the Lab's innovative solutions for global airport operations. Both CAAS and JCAB expressed enthusiasm for the progress made and the future potential of their partnership.
