In India, contracts have been awarded or are in process for establishing a massive electrolyser manufacturing capacity of 3,000 MW per annum and green hydrogen production capacity of 4,12,000 tons per annum. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is spearheading the National Green Hydrogen Mission to position the country as a global leader in green hydrogen production, usage, and export. Approved by the Union Cabinet in January 2023, the mission aims at attracting over INR 8 lakh crore in investments, generating six lakh jobs, reducing fossil fuel imports by INR 1 lakh crore, and cutting down nearly 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas emissions. To support this initiative, the government has allocated INR 13,050 crore for green hydrogen production incentives and INR 4,440 crore for domestic electrolyser manufacturing incentives. Additionally, the Ministry of Power has waived off Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for green hydrogen production plants if commissioned by December 2030, further incentivizing the development of a competitive green hydrogen market in the country. These efforts signal a positive stride towards industrial development, job creation, and fostering an environmentally sustainable energy transition in India.
