Key Ideas
  • The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has announced an exemption to promote renewable energy adoption and green hydrogen production.
  • Renewable energy plants supplying power to units engaged in green hydrogen within SEZs or EOUs will be exempt from certain regulations to facilitate growth.
  • This exemption aligns with the government's agenda to create a conducive environment for renewable energy and promote green hydrogen as a cleaner fuel alternative.
  • India's National Green Hydrogen Mission aims for significant investments and capacity additions in green hydrogen production and renewable energy by 2030.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India has issued a notice announcing an exemption to promote renewable energy adoption and facilitate the production of green hydrogen. This exemption applies to renewable energy plants located within Special Economic Zones (SEZs) or Export Oriented Units (EOUs) that exclusively supply power to production units engaged in green hydrogen or its derivatives. By exempting these plants from certain regulations, the government aims to create a conducive environment for renewable energy growth and promote green hydrogen as a cleaner fuel alternative. The exemption, detailed in the notice, relieves qualifying RE plants commissioned by December 31, 2030, from specific obligations related to the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) requirements for Solar PV Modules. This regulatory relief recognizes the importance of green hydrogen in transitioning towards a low-carbon economy and provides a boost to the development of cleaner energy solutions. Furthermore, India's National Green Hydrogen Mission projects a substantial investment of INR 8 lakh crore by 2030 to develop a green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 MMT per annum. This investment is coupled with a renewable energy capacity addition target of about 125 GW by the same deadline, emphasizing the country's commitment to sustainable energy initiatives and a cleaner future.
