NEDO Supporting JERA's Hydrogen and Ammonia Study in Thailand
Key Ideas
- JERA, with NEDO's support, is conducting a study on hydrogen and ammonia demand in Thailand to achieve stable operation of ammonia cracking equipment.
- The project aims to investigate methods for a stable hydrogen supply and optimize hydrogen storage facilities.
- Ammonia is highlighted as a clean fuel with potential for hydrogen transport, and ammonia cracking equipment cost reduction is key for a hydrogen society.
- JERA has an ongoing collaboration with PTT Public Company Limited to expand the hydrogen and ammonia supply chain towards decarbonization in Thailand.
JERA, in collaboration with NEDO, has been selected for a project focusing on hydrogen and ammonia in Thailand. The aim is to study the demand for these elements and conduct research to ensure stable operation of ammonia cracking equipment. The project, in partnership with JERA Asia and Toyo Engineering Corporation, will investigate the supply of hydrogen in various industries in Thailand and develop technology to extract hydrogen from ammonia through cracking. The initiative also involves optimizing the design of hydrogen storage facilities. Ammonia is recognized as a clean fuel that emits no CO2 during combustion and can be used as a carrier for hydrogen. JERA emphasizes the importance of cost reduction for the equipment used to extract hydrogen from ammonia to meet the demand for hydrogen efficiently. This project, set to run for a year starting in the middle of fiscal 2024, aims to contribute to the advancement of a hydrogen society. JERA's existing partnership with PTT Public Company Limited focuses on expanding the hydrogen and ammonia supply chain in Thailand, aligning with efforts for decarbonization. Through this project, both companies plan to continue their collaboration to promote sustainability in the region.
