Key Ideas
  • The Port of Newcastle's Clean Energy Precinct project has reached a milestone with agreements signed for FEED and EIS studies, supported by $100m Australian Government funding.
  • The project aims to transform a disused industrial site into a hub for clean energy production, storage, transmission, and export, positioning Australia as a global leader in reducing carbon emissions with technologies like hydrogen and green ammonia.
  • Studies by tenderers Lumea, coNEXA, and GHD will inform site enablement, layout, and design for future planning approvals, with construction expected to start in 2027 and operations by 2030.
  • Port of Newcastle CEO highlighted the focus on electrical infrastructure, water services, general infrastructure, storage, and pipelines to berth as part of the project's development.
The Port of Newcastle's Clean Energy Precinct in Australia has achieved a significant milestone with the signing of agreements for Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) studies. This initiative, backed by $100 million in funding from the Australian Government, aims to revitalize a 220-hectare unused industrial site. The project will facilitate the production, storage, transmission, domestic distribution, and global export of clean energy. CEO Craig Carmody outlined that the studies will cover various aspects including electrical infrastructure, water services, general infrastructure, storage, berth infrastructure, and pipelines. Successful tenderers such as Lumea, coNEXA, and GHD will play key roles in informing future site enablement and design. The construction of the facilities is anticipated to commence in 2027, with operations scheduled to begin by 2030. Minister Catherine King emphasized that this project will establish Australia as a leader in technologies and products that combat carbon emissions, particularly highlighting the focus on hydrogen and green ammonia. The development of the precinct is expected to bolster the country's position on the global stage in promoting sustainable energy solutions.
