Singapore Shipper Achieves Milestone with Simultaneous Bio-Methanol Refuelling of Cargo Ship
Key Ideas
  • X-Press Feeders in Singapore successfully refuelled a container ship with bio-methanol while loading cargo, improving turnaround time and reducing emissions.
  • The use of green methanol, composed of waste CO2 and green hydrogen, is a significant step towards lower carbon footprint in the maritime industry.
  • Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority supported the refuelling, indicating a shift towards low-carbon fuel in one of the world's largest bunkering hubs.
  • X-Press Feeders plans to add 14 dual-fuel vessels to its fleet, showcasing a commitment to environmental sustainability in maritime operations.
A Singapore-based shipping firm, X-Press Feeders, achieved a significant milestone by conducting the world's first simultaneous refuelling of a container ship with bio-methanol while it was being loaded with cargo in the port. The CEO of X-Press Feeders, Shmuel Yoskovitz, highlighted that this simultaneous loading and refuelling process helps hasten a vessel's turnaround time, enabling the ship to sail at a slower pace, thereby reducing fuel consumption, costs, and emissions. The use of green methanol, also known as bio-methanol, is made from waste CO2 and green hydrogen, which is produced by splitting water molecules using renewable energy sources. This innovation was lauded as a significant leap forward for both X-Press Feeders and the global maritime industry by the firm's COO, Francis Goh. Compared to conventional marine fuels, green methanol has a lower carbon footprint, reducing emissions by up to 65%. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, which supported this initiative at Tuas Port, indicated a willingness to offer methanol bunkering on a commercial scale, signaling the city-state's commitment to eco-friendly fuel alternatives. X-Press Feeders intends to introduce 14 dual-fuel vessels to its fleet, emphasizing a dedication to environmental sustainability in maritime operations. This development aligns with broader industry trends towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources in the shipping sector.
